More than 10 mission-critical VB.NET services, including domain activation, hosting provisioning, payment processing, customer management, and renewal workflows, were modernized and migrated to a more sustainable, observable, and high-performance .NET 7 architecture for one of Turkey’s high-traffic hosting platforms. This transformation reduced production error rates, improved API response times, shortened incident detection time, and significantly increased operational reliability in production environments.

Natro — Domain & Hosting Platform Modernization

As part of this project, more than 10 critical services supporting high-volume domain and hosting operations in Turkey were modernized and migrated from a legacy VB.NET-based structure to a .NET 7-based service architecture that is more sustainable, observable, and high-performing.

The modernization focused not only on technology renewal, but also on maintainability, operational visibility, error management, performance optimization, and service continuity. As a result, both engineering productivity and platform stability were significantly improved.

Core Areas Modernized

  • 🌐 Domain activation workflows
  • 🖥️ Hosting provisioning processes
  • 💳 Payment and billing services
  • 👤 Customer management operations
  • 🔁 Renewal and extension workflows
  • ⏰ Scheduled tasks and background processing
  • 📡 Inter-service communication and error monitoring infrastructure

Business Objective

The objective was to re-engineer long-running legacy services so they could support high traffic, continuous availability, and evolving operational demands without disrupting critical business flows. The main goal was to migrate the platform safely to a modern stack while improving service reliability and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Key Outcomes

✅ 10+ mission-critical services modernized

✅ Production error rates reduced by approximately 45%

✅ API response times improved by approximately 30%

✅ Incident detection time reduced by approximately 50%

✅ Structured logging standardized across the service layer

✅ Real-time alerting and monitoring enabled with Sentry integration

Architectural Transformation Approach

The modernization was carried out in a controlled and phased manner. Legacy service behavior was analyzed carefully, business rules were preserved, and critical workflows were redesigned and migrated into a .NET 7-based service structure. The new architecture was built with clearer separation of concerns, more readable code, centralized error tracking, and measurable operational insights.

Technical Approaches Used

  • .NET 7 / C# for rebuilding modern service layers
  • ASP.NET Core for scalable and maintainable API design
  • Microsoft SQL Server for controlled adaptation of existing data structures
  • Hangfire for reliable background job orchestration
  • Sentry for real-time error monitoring and alerting
  • Structured Logging for service-level observability and faster troubleshooting

Observability & Operational Gains

One of the most valuable outcomes of the project was the improvement in observability. By expanding structured logging practices across the service layer, error scenarios, performance bottlenecks, and integration issues became significantly easier to detect and investigate. With Sentry integration, teams were able to respond proactively before issues affected customers.

Operational Impact
Real-time visibility did not only improve resolution times, but also significantly shortened the time needed to detect incidents in the first place. This reduced the burden on support teams and improved overall customer experience.

Service Continuity & Reliability

In high-volume domain and hosting operations, even a small failure can create serious customer impact. For that reason, service behavior was redesigned with reliability as a core principle. Fault tolerance was improved, error logs became more actionable, and difficult-to-maintain legacy workflows were transformed into more manageable service modules.

Main Challenges Addressed

  • Preserving business rules accumulated over years in legacy services
  • Safely migrating always-on critical workflows
  • Managing the transition between old and new services in a controlled way
  • Improving performance without disrupting existing operations
  • Creating a visibility level that enabled support teams to act faster

Business Outcome

At the end of the modernization effort, technical debt was reduced across high-priority services, maintainability was improved, and the platform achieved a more stable operational state. With faster response times, fewer production issues, and stronger observability, the organization gained a much more sustainable technology foundation for enterprise-scale operations.

Impact Summary Table

Area Outcome
Service modernization 10+ critical services migrated to a modern architecture
Production errors Approximately 45% reduction
API performance Approximately 30% improvement
Incident detection Approximately 50% faster detection
Observability Structured logging and Sentry integration

Conclusion

This transformation for Natro went beyond a standard technology upgrade and established a stronger, more measurable, and more sustainable service infrastructure for high-traffic domain and hosting operations. It stands as a strong example of how legacy system modernization, when combined with the right architectural strategy and observability practices, can translate directly into business value.
